Beethoven, Ludwig van
Sonata No. 21 in C major, Op. 53 'Waldstein'
Recording: January 1972
Emil Gilels, Piano
Nicknamed Waldstein, completed in 1804, this is considered one of Beethoven's greatest piano sonatas of his middle period. Appassionata, Op. 57 and Les Adieux, Op. 81a are the other two from this period (1803-1812).
Classical era Sonata form for solo piano traditionally in three movements. It is sometimes presented in four movements with prestissimo (very fast), usually the closing of the third movement, is played as a short finale and thus nominally the fourth movement in this case.
I. Allegro con brio
II. Introduzione. Adagio molto - attacca
III. Rondo. Allegretto moderato -
