Not Surprising, a early 90's group with amazing musicianship, lyrics, and vocals, a big full chiming sound, great stuff. The main commercial stumbling block....They are gay and sing about it. This essentially blacklisted them from getting any kind of exposure.
If you aren't too homophobic, and can get past a few lyrics that are decidedly unambiguously gay, (really only 3 or 4 sentences total out of the 9 songs are overtly gay in nature, most of the lyrics are simply about relationships regardless of gender) you'll be treated to a great musical work.
What's great about this album??
1) Only 3 members are in the band and they do not "back track" (make a recording of some instrumental parts then play other instruments on top of them as they are played back) The sound is a driving rock beat with great sounds and good lyrical melodies. Julian Swales; Guitar, Patrick Fitzgerald; Vocals & Bass, Dan Goodwin; Drums.
2) Guitar playing by Julian is unreal, having seen them in concert, It is amazing what he does....Julian essentially plays through so many effects pedals and such that he is playing the harmonics which are created as opposed to actual the chords & notes on the guitar, the effect is a wash of sound that is like 3 people playing instruments instead of just 1.
3) Patrick has a great voice for singing the songs KoD performs, in order to fill out the sound of the group he plays a lot of bass cords on his bass guitar to help create the big sound.
4) Dans drums are simply great in that it forms a machine like backdrop that never skips a beat.
If you want more background on these guy's check out the Wickipedia page on them.
Give this a good listen and you'll be amazed at the sound. Play it a few more times and you'll understand why many musicians consider this one of the great pivotal works ever created that no one has ever heard of.
