Book Title: "Disguised : A True Story"
Authors: Pat Moore, Charles Paul Conn
Patricia Moore relates a story about her grandfather. She had been out all day, and went to her family home to visit her grandfather. She found him sitting alone in the dark in the living room. When she asked her grandfather why he was sitting in the dark, he replied “Because I couldn’t get my fingers to work the lamp switch.” Inspired by this experience, Patricia, an industrial designer, began an evolutionary career from designer to champion of accessibility and design issues.
In her 1985 book, Disguised: A True Story, Patricia Moore wrote about her experiences dressing up as a woman in her mid-eighties. Once a week for more than three years Moore—a 26-year-old industrial designer when she began her experiment—transformed herself with latex and makeup and experienced firsthand the daily indignities of life as an elderly person, as she walked the streets of 116 cities. Her field study provided stunning insights into the obstacles that older women confront in daily life.
