Thanks to IcK! for the original rip - I converted the AC3 audio to VBR mp3 and trimmed off some trailers that were tagged onto the end of the film. Film has Danish subtitles. I really like this movie.
Two mob money couriers, Frankie and Tony, have their latest package of $1 million stolen by two con women, Dana and Marcia, in which the men must find the women to recover the money before they become marked men.
"It's an exploitation super-summit, as legendary adults-only producers David F. Friedman, Bob Cresse, Wes Bishop, R. Lee Frost, and softcore star John Alderman join forces behind and in front of the camera for this rediscovered black-and-white "roughie." Producer/co-scripter Bishop and Stefan Zima star as two bag men sent by gangster chieftain Cresse to pick up a cool million from rival boss Friedman in Las Vegas. On the return trip, the pair give a lift to sultry stranded motorists Tracy Saunders and Lin Harris. After a night of tawdry grapplings, Bishop and Zima awake to discover that the ladies have vanished with the loot. Naturally, this does not sit well with either Friedman or Cresse, who both dispatch some muscle to find these errant errand boys. Meanwhile, Bishop and Zima manage to track down the ladies in Los Angeles, where they take some very extreme measures to extract the location of the stolen money. Low key and grimy to a fault, this noir-ish exploitation thriller stands a notch or two above the usual grindhouse fare by virtue of its moody and oppressive direction and photography by Frost (The Defilers). Also, "roughie" fans will appreciate the lengths to which the script by Frost and Bishop (whose other writing credits include Race With the Devil) goes to deliver the brutal goods, including, pardon the pun, a shocking electrocution scene. On the other hand, exploitation students will enjoy this rare opportunity to see so many storied figures gathered together in one film and, by the looks of it, enjoying a chance to play tough-guy (and, in the case of Friedman, even indulge in a little softcore hanky-panky). Long considered a lost title, it was unearthed by Something Weird proprietor Mike Vraney in a Danish film vault (which accounts for the Danish subtitles) in 1999." - All Movie Guide [Paul Gaita]
"SWV had been searching for this legendary "lost" roughie for years and finally unearthed it in Copenhagen of all places! Slickly directed by The Animal’s R. LEE FROST, The Pick-Up’s notoriety comes from an extremely nasty nipple electrocution scene as well as the casting of (real-life friends and adult-film competitors) DAVID F.FRIEDMAN and BOB CRESSE as mob gangsters.
Tony and Franky (producer WES BISHOP and STEFAN ZEMA) are bag men hired by slimy Sal (Cresse) in L.A. to pick up about a million bucks (skimmed from Vegas casinos) from Charlie Rosa (Friedman) in Las Vegas. En route back to Sal, the boys stop to help Dana and Marcia (TRACY SAUNDERS and LYNN HARRIS), two damsels in distress with car trouble. As expected, the men can’t resist the gals’ seductive charms and they end up detouring to a roadside motel where the girls literally screw the guys over and — surprise! — scram with the toot.
Naturally, all hell breaks loose: "It smells, Charlie." Both Sal and Charlie send men out to find Tony and Franky while Tony and Franky track down the little strumpets in L. A. where they proceed to torture them into confessing where they hid the loot. Sadists take note: after beating both of them senseless with belts, Tony tapes an electrical cord to Dana’s tits, pours water over her, and plugs the cord into the wall socket. Dzzzzzzzzzzzittt!!!
The girls talk, the money is returned to Sal but... well, let’s just say there are a couple of jokers in the pack, all of which leads to a violent confrontation between the heads of EVI and Olympic International...
Both Friedman and Cresse look like they’re having a gas playing goodfellas. Dave gets chased, shot at, and even scorches up the screen in a typical late-sixties sex scene with a gal he’s Interviewing" for a job. He’s also natural and low-key on camera, in direct contrast to Cresse, who chews the scenery in another classic hambone performance of the kind you’d expect from the man who played the diminutive Nazi in Love Camp 7. Also on hand is sexploitation vet JOHN ALDERMAN in a groovy white suit complete with love beads and beard.
As might be expected from such a personal project Friedman was trying to find a print of The Pick-Up for the past ten years and was constantly asking SWV head honcho Mike Vraney if he’d found it yet. Nothing gave Mike more pleasure than to close out the last century by personally escorting Dave into a dingy old film vault in Denmark and presenting him with the print used for this video. As Mike said, It was like finding the Holy Grail!"
From a cash-crazed 35mm print in English with wacky Danish subtitles.
