Der kleine Fisch Ben lebt in den schmutzigen Gewässern vor der Stadt Boston. Als seine Eltern eines Tages in einem Fischernetz verschleppt werden und Ben allein zurückbleiben muss, macht er sich auf den Weg zu seiner Tante, die im schönen Riff lebt. Auf der Reise bekommt er Hilfe von neuen Freunden, und so schafft er es schließlich zum Riff. Mittlerweile in der Fisch-Pubertät angekommen, verliebt er sich dort in Cornelia.
