Once upon a time, there were the Olympics. The year was 1980. The Summer Games were to be held in Moscow.
As part of it\'s Olympic coverage, NBC had commissioned a cartoon about animals competing in their own Olympic type games..ANIMALYMPICS.
While the Winter Games portion was shown, something prevented NBC from showing the summer portion.
Russia, you see, invaded Afghanistan. This led set off 2 chain of events. The first eventually leads to G.W.Bush\'s Iraqi adventure. The second led to Jimmy Carter deciding that the US would boycott the Olympics, causing NBC to cancel their coverage of the Olympics.
Undettered, the shows creators took the 2 parts of their show, and filled it out to form a full movie, which received a limited theatrical release on May 1, 1980. ANIMALYMPICS would then go to become a staple on pay cable like HBO and Showtime in the early 80s, which is where I come into the story.
I watched ANIMALYMPICS on HBO as a kid, and I loved it! I remember having a ANIMALYMPICS club at school where me and my friends would play our favorite characters on the playground. It is a much loved memory from childhood.
Well, the movie received some poor video tape treatments, and being sliced up for Disney channel with \"objectionable material\" removed. It\'s never been made available on DVD. As it\'s creator/director Steven Lisberger would go on to direct Tron, it\'s art director Roger Allers would go on to direct The Lion King, one of it\'s animators, Brad Bird, would go on to become the king of animation (Iron Iron Giant, The Incredibles, Ratatouille), and it\'s voice cast features Billy Cristal, Gilda Radner, and Harry Shearer, this is a great shame.
Long have I tried to find the movie. But I could never find any digital copies, legit or not, nor could I find the video for anything that I was willing to pay. Then on March 27, bored, I was flipping through what was available on Comcast\'s OnDemand service Free Movies list, and there it was! And the next night, after running OnDemand thru my DVR, it was on my computer, a high quality digital copy of ANIMALYMPICS at last. *
I then spent the next month learning new techniques for DVD creation so that I could have things just how I wanted them...chapter markers at the right place, music playing in the menus...things working just how I want them. And the DVD is stocked with extras like an iPod version of the movie, a cartoon by the director, the soundtrack and as much of the limited art available I could find. And then I started work on the DVD Cover. On lots of things, I just store DVD\'s in a large chest designed for them, and on some, I do covers...but my covers, while good, have always lacked a certain \"pro\" feel that I\'ve seen in other\'s who do fan covers work. So I really aimed at getting everything just right, making my cover look as good and as \"pro\" as I could. I don\'t know if I succeeded, but I\'m satisfied with it.
