Being a worshipper of Terry Gilliam\'s 1988 \'The Adventures of Baron Munchausen\' and having read around that he had been borrowing a lot from the 1943 von Baky\'s version (\"He also takes from von Báky a number of set and costume designs. The sultan\\\'s palace in Gilliam\'s movie is, for example, derived from that in von Báky\'s, as are the garments worn by the sultan and his courtiers.\" Keith Allen), then I couldn\'t help but go and get that 1943 thing...
Well... if it was meant to be the nazi answer to the Wizard of Oz or The thief of Bagdad, it has fallen short of the target...
Still it\'s a quite amazing movie, I mean, wow! in color, shot during WWII, right before the fall of nazi Germany begun... And there are beauties, action, nudity, more action and more beauties (did I mention nudity?). And no nazi propaganda whatsoever !!!
In fact the screenplay writer, Erich Kästner (Dysney\'s 1961 The Parent Trap), had been blacklisted by the nazis and had to work under the pseudonym Berthold Bürger, uncredited. He even managed to smuggle a subtle anti-nazi satire in the line \"Die Zeit is Kaputt\" (The time is broken / The times are broken). It seems that when Hitler came to know who the writer was, well after the movie was complete, he got into one of his fit of rage...
