This fan edit of the final Lord of the Rings film seeks to be as conservative toward the films as they are while at the same time doing all that is reasonably possible to force them to agree with Tolkien's writing. They do not strictly hold to the book's construction and presentation of events as a rule, but do strive to present the contents accurately. “Historically accurate.” These are more akin to the TTT Purist Edit that has been floating around for the last few years.
These edits are based on the extended editions, and will be offered in a format that has not been re-encoded or compressed in the slightest bit from the original DVD source. (The video, anyway.)
There was a lot less to edit in this last installment, and disc 2 contains only two changes!
Three scenes are trimmed in order to cripple the feeble “information” subplot. The palantir does not relay strategic information to Pippin, and Saruman is not needed for information either. Gandalf already knows Sauron's next move and how to respond. Pippin does not see Minas Tirith in the palantir.
Merry doesn’t tell Pippin that he smokes too much.
Arwen’s not dying, but she does still inspire the re-forging of Anduril.
The paths of the dead sequence is cleaned up by removing the silliness, like Gimli blowing away whispy ghosts. Also, as in the theatrical version, we are left hanging until Aragorn saves the day at Pellenor fields.
Denethor does not run away on fire.
Removed Legolas’ star moment with the elephant.
This fan edit trims less than 25 minutes from the film in total, leaving it right about 3 hours 45 minutes in length.
Disc 1 is too big for a single layered, disc. But feel free to use DVD Shrink or whatever software you have to squeeze it into a single layered disc if you wish.
I want to give a special thank you to Lord Phillock, the editor behind the “Book Cuts”, which are very excellent. Check those edits out too, along with this one.
And stay tuned for more. A revamped “book cut” is also coming.
