The main catalyst has been the spectacular growth of computer science, which
makes it possible to analyze and digest the feast of information that marks the
complexity of the nervous system. It has been just 60 years since
the introduction of the Eniac, a vacuum tube computer that occupied the entire
floor of a building at the University of Pennsylvania, capable of fewer
calculations than a simple pocket calculator can now accomplish. It has been
approximately 30 years since the birth of the Altair 8800, the first very basic
personal computer, which led to the formation of Apple Computer the following
year and the release five years later of the first IBM personal computer. It has
been the development of computer science that has at last made possible the
search for the significant but seemingly random response of a group of neurons.
The use of myriad calculations to localize activity deep within the brain
has become feasible. The identification of a subtle response evoked by
electrical or natural stimulation can be deduced despite the host of random
activity in which it is buried.
