Opioid addiction is a problem with high costs to individuals, families, and society. This TIP provides a detailed description of medication-assisted treatment for opioid addiction, including optional approaches such as comprehensive maintenance treatment, detoxification, and medically supervised withdrawal. SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) recently released new guidelines on medication-assisted treatment in Opioid Treatment Programs (OTPs), which largely provide services to people addicted to heroin or prescription drugs containing opiates.
