Kuro (Black) and Shiro (White) are two orphans who live in the streets of Takara Machi (Treasure City) where they live their lives together surviving through pickpocketing and living in their Volkswagen Beetle they call their home. Life is simple, trying to keep away from the local bullies, befriending other homeless folk, and keeping each other company until the local yakuza come in to their town with real estate plans of their own to destroy their home. Unwilling to accept this change, the tough and street smart Kuro (who is gifted with unusual powers) seeks to single handedly foil their plans while the gentle and childish Shiro seeks to save Kuro from himself.

Tekkonkinkreet (sometimes spelled Tekkon Kin Creat) was originally a manga from artist Taiyo Matsumoto (known for his work with Ping Pong), under the name Black and White and is directed by Michael Arias (making him the first non-Japanese Director of a major anime film) and is assisted by the talented staff of Studio 4 Degrees C. The film depects the world of Takara Machi through the eyes of the two protagonists as they try to survive the vicious world the yakuza has thrust upon them. Kuro and Shiro seamlessly fit together in a brotherly fashion despite their opposite personalities protecting each other in their own way giving a strong importance to the term family. Utilizes the voice talents of popular Japanese actors and actresses Yu Aoi (Shiro), Kazunari Ninomiya (Kuro), Yoshinori Okada (Vanilla), and Masa Hiro Motoki (Hebi). Winner of Best Film Award at the 2006 Mainichi Film Awards and was named #1 film of 2006 in the annual "Best of" roundup by the New York Museum of Modern Art's Artforum magazine.
