Afternoon of Darkness, like its predecessors, is all about grid-battles and character sprite dialogues. That's the majority of the experience right there. You start with a scene or two of exposition, and then you warp into the field of battle. There's a portal on the ground with which you spawn the characters of your party, and then you issue movement and battle commands. That's the most basic principle behind the game. As you progress further, there's infinitely more to do, including insane amounts of leveling up, a host of character skills and techniques to unlock, as well as a character creation system (plus, you can even level up your items!). Those of you who have played the original title know just how much time you can pour into this game, and Afternoon of Darkness looks to be no different.
