These twenty variations on the Woman Warrior theme poke gentle fun even as they extend the concept beyond the 'bimbo-with-a-blade' as Friesner points out in her excellent introduction. She proves her point in the sheer range of the stories that follow.

Each of these stories will make you at least smile if not laugh out loud -- it is one of the most consistently funny collections I've ever come across. One might expect the humor to pall after a few stories, but each is fresh and inventive.

Did You Say Chicks?! is the sequel to Chicks in Chainmail and its nineteen stories (plus a delightful Ode to Xena on the dedication page) carries on in the proud tradition of the first volume. Some authors return and others are new, but they share in common inventive, original and funny stories.

A brief word from the characters: We seem to have a failure to communicate here. Hey, it's okay with us that Chicks in Chainmail was so popular, and reached Number 3 on the Locus bestseller list, and everybody wanted more, please. But people, you need to take us sword-swinging amazons a little more seriously. After all, you think it's a picnic wearing a cold brass brassiere (let alone finding the right size)? You think it's a piece of cake keeping those chainmail accessories from rusting when it rains? You think it's a walk in the park besieging a city when you've got PMS? Think again, you wimpy noncombatants!

Sure, you're entitled to a laugh to two. Hey, we like a good joke as much as the next amazon. But hard experience has taught us that swordswomen don't get no respect. Pardon us a moment...have to wash the blood stains off these swords before they set...



Chicks 'n Chained Males - The third book in the Chicks in Chainmail series (1999)

Friesner and her crew have yet to run out of steam with these anthologies. The eighteen stories in this third volume are just as fresh and funny as the stories in the previous two, and I don't think there have been this many puns in one place since the editor spent fifteen minutes by himself. This time, each story revolves around a 'chained' male. One would think that this would limit the writers' creativity, but they each rise to the challenge admirably.



The Chick Is in the Mail - The fourth book in the Chicks in Chainmail series (2000)

The Chick is in the Mail is editor Esther Friesner's fourth collection of stories starring feisty females and a cover featuring a warrior woman whose barely visible means of support couldn't possibly comprise sufficient bronze to coat adequately a baby shoe. As with the previous collections, the 15 stories and 1 poem by 17 authors (one story is a collaboration) demonstrate a vivid range of imagination and interpretation.

The single poem, 'To His Iron-Clad Mistress' is by Kent Patterson and kicks off the collection with its brief declaration of everlasting love. Well, 'enduring' might be a better word. Or perhaps we should just say that his love is less prone to rust.

While one might think that by the fourth collection the theme might pall, in The Chick in the Mail Esther Friesner proves that given encouragement, the bounds of human creativity are indeed limitless.



Turn the Other Chick - The fifth book in the Chicks in Chainmail series (2004)
