Where Angels Fear to Tread - by EM Forster - BBC Radio Full-Cast Drama - cheops
A BBC Radio Full-Cast Dramatisation of EM Forster's first novel, published in 1905.
Penny Leicester's adaptation of E M Forster's witty story of the cultural divide between English conventionalism and Italian romance. The story follows the fortunes of Lilia, a boisterous thirty three year old widow, and her relations by marriage, the Herritons. When Lilia begins to socially embarrass her in-laws, the family dispatches her to Italy to be a companion for young Caroline Abbott who has grand ideas of experiencing 'real life' in Italy before returning to routine at home.
Witty, perceptive and poignant, Where Angels Fear to Tread is both comedy and tragedy. Forester's sympathy for his characters allows both enormous wit and great insight. Seen by many critics as a near perfect novel, Where Angels Fear to Tread is as fresh and as resonant in its exploration of prejudice and narrow-mindedness as when it was written a hundred years ago.
