Woman's Hour Drama: What I Think of My Husband 31-03-2008 04-04-2008

1/5. Stephen Wakelam's dramatisation of the story of Thomas Hardy's romance with his secretary, Florence Dugdale. The early meetings of young Florence and the "greatest writer in England" hint at a growing intimacy.

Florence ............................................. Hattie Morahan
Thomas Hardy .......................................... Nigel Anthony
Emma .................................................. Marcia Warren
Clodd .................................................... Sean Baker
Lady Grove ........................................... Liz Sutherland
Chairwoman .............................................. Liza Sadovy
Henry .................................................... Ray Lonnen
Lilian .............................................. Helen Longworth
Cockerell ......................................... Stephen Critchlow
American ................................................ Chris Pavlo
Prince of Wales ........................................... Ben Crowe

Producer: David Hunter

2/5. Thomas Hardy, increasingly dependent on Florence, engineers a meeting between her and his wife, Emma.

3/5. Florence finds herself increasingly uncomfortable in the Hardy household. After Emma's death they find her meticulous accounts of his shortcomings

4/5. Having found herself, rather unromantically, the second Mrs Thomas Hardy, Florence has to witness his increasing obsession with writing poems about her deceased predecessor.

5/5. Florence looks after Hardy in his later years, helping him to rewrite history.

From the Radio Times

He met and devoted his attentions to herthis drama makes it impossible to believe that he ever fell completely in love with a woman -when he was still married to his first wife, Emma. Once Emma had died, Florence went to live with him as his secretary-cum-carer, which is when they both discovered his first wife's farfrom complimentary diaries about him; they provide the title to this serial. Hattie Morahan (who was sensational as Elinor Dashwood in BBC1's dramatisation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility earlier this year) brings dignity to Florence's awkward situation-she's a young woman with literary ambitions who ends up more like a servant than a partner. This is a tightly produced drama with a compelling real-life story at its heart. My one small criticism is the modernisation of the dialogue; men asking women "And how do you feel?" just wouldn't have happened in First World War Britain.
