This pitch-perfect dramatisation of John le Carre's second novel leaves behind the world of espionage and enters the realm of the traditional whodunnit as George Smiley (Simon Russell Beale) investigates the murder of a master's wife at a venerable public school. Stripping away the veneer of a close-knit society to reveal the horror lurking underneath is more commonly the preoccupation of crime writers Dorothy L Sayers and PD James, but it's fascinating to get a glimpse of the kind of sleuth Smiley would have made had Le Carre continued to take his creation in that direction.
