Torrent description

The Making of Mr Hai's Daughter - by Yasmin Hai - NEW BBC Radio Audiobook - cheops

Seeta Indrani reads from Yasmin Hai's account of her assimilation into the English way of life.

This new book from Yasmin Hai was published THREE DAYS AGO ( 03/04/2008 ) and was featured on BBC Radio 4 as 'book of the week'.

Mr Hai arrived in London in 1964. But, while becoming British via a passport had been relatively easy, becoming English was something to be studied - and then passed on, first to his wife, newly arrived from Pakistan, and then to his children.

No more speaking Urdu, no more long plaits, no shalwar kameezes, and - even though they were Muslim - no more religion. Mr Hai put his family firmly on the road to assimilation, and his first-born daughter Yasmin was his star pupil. However, being second-generation British Asian was not quite so simple - especially as their Muslim community was about to go through some very profound changes and challenges...

Brilliantly told, with intelligence and humour and passion, this is a fascinating story about immigration and identity, about religion and roots, and about a daughter's understanding of her father.

Five episodes of 15 minutes each.

Episode 1:
Syed Samsamaul Hai arrives in London in 1964. After an illustrious political career in Pakistan, he is faced with a cold damp England, but is delighted with his British passport and eager to learn how to become English.

Episode 2:
Nearly a decade after arriving from Pakistan, Mr Hai has a good job, a wife and children. It is now time to move from his cramped flat in Holloway to a house in Wembley and embark on Operation Children to make his children English.

Episode 3:
Nearly a decade after arriving from Pakistan, Mr Hai has a good job, a wife and children. It is now time to move from his cramped flat in Holloway to a house in Wembley and embark on Operation Children to make his children English.

Episode 4:
Yasmin's father dies when she is just 17, leaving her to negotiate the challenge of becoming Mr Hai's perfect daughter without his guidance.

Episode 5:
As many of her friends turn their back on multicultural Britain, Mr Hai's daughter is left wondering what has become of her father's dream.

First broadcast from 31/3/2008 to 4/4/2008 on BBC Radio 4.
