The Enigma I Will Not Explain - Edward Elgar's Engima Variations.
BBC R4 29 Oct 2008 to 9 Nov 2008
Ruth Padel presents a series exploring the music of Elgar's Enigma Variations and analysing what the composition tells us about Elgar himself.
From The Telegraph
Ruth Padel explores Elgar’s Enigma Variations, the people in them. She pictures him playing the piano after a long hard day. Alice, his wife, remarks that she likes the tune. He goes back to it, adding details which reflect their friends, checking each one against Alice’s reaction. The Enigma Variations, Padel shows, illuminate the man and his music.

1/4 Female Infuences
This programme examines the female influences in Elgar's life, from the guiding spirit of his wife Alice to his friendship with Dorabella and a mystery of three asterisks.
The Variations depict 13 of Elgar's friends as well as the composer himself. One friend in particular inspired the well-known Nimrod Variation, but who was the figure behind the music and what part did he play in Elgar's career?
Elgar lived most of his life among the Malvern Hills and the Variations depicted other friends living in the area. How important was the glorious landscape to his musical creativity?
Having depicted 13 of his friends in the Variations, Elgar used the final movement for his own self-portrait. What does the music tell us about him, and how did the problems he faced while writing it prepare him for composing his first symphony?
Not my rip & I don't remember where I got it from, but thanks to whoever you are.
