Simpson Returns to China

1/2. The Road from Tiananmen 19-02-2008

As the world's eyes focus on China ahead of the Olympic Games, veteran BBC journalist John Simpson recalls the Tiananmen Square massacre of 1989.

Producer Daniel Tetlow

2/2. Win in China? 26-02-2008

Meeting some of the winners and losers of China's economic boom, John Simpson is a guest on China's equivalent to Dragons'Den and then talks to social activists in Van.

Producer Daniel Tetlow

From the Radio Times

Watching the Tiananmen Square demonstrations and being there when the students were shot down on the night of 3 June 1989, was one of the worst experiences of my life. I felt sure that Chinese Communism would collapse in chaos.
I couldn't have been more wrong. Nineteen years later, I wanted to find out why.
Travelling round, I interviewed government officials who said the massacre had been cruel but necessary, and dissidents under house arrest who stood by everything the students demonstrated for.
I met would-be millionaires on the set of the hit television series Win in China, a version of our Dragon's Den, and people out in the countryside who were so poor they lived in holes in the ground.
The man who trained the top Chinese leaders assured me that true democracy was on the
way; yet when I went to the place where people take their complaints against the government I was lucky not to be beaten up.
China is a country where almost everyone seems optimistic. The rich think they'll get richer, the poor less poor, and the dissidents think there'll be free elections in ten years. Is it possible they can all be correct?
