Rudy's Rare Records - Series 1

Rudy Sharpe, the owner of Rudy's Rare Records has a simple marketing strategy - “If it's not on the shelves, it's on the floor”, and “If we don have it, dem don mek it.” So when a customer asks for Girls Aloud's greatest hits, dem don mek it. The Spice Girls? “Get out mah shop.”

Rudy (Larrington Walker) is like Bernard Black of Black Books, so in love with his own world that he doesn't want anyone to share it, a cantankerous, lecherous old man who is one of the main characters in a fine new sitcom written by Dan Tetsell and Danny Robins.

The other main character is his son Adam (Lenny Henry), a classical-music-loving nerd who fled the family home in Handsworth, Birmingham, driven away by Rudy. “My records,” Rudy says, “are like my children.” “What - you threw them in the canal to teach them to swim?” Adam says.

And there's the other echo in the show - it's Steptoe and Son. The two are joined by a sense of duty (on Adam's part) and, as it transpires, a sort of love.

Rudy suffers a heart scare, and Adam leaves his own shop down in London (Bach to Basics, which he runs as efficiently as Rudy runs his slap-happily - “Michael Nyman praised my shelves. I almost cried”) to care for the old goat, run his shop, sort out his accounts, and all without pay. Adam hates working in the shop. It offends him. A customer comes in. “Hit me wit de latest radip [that's what it sounds like] banga, get me?” he says. “Are you on drugs?” Adam says.

Adam has a son, Richie (Joe Jacobs), who runs a pirate radio station so niche that it can be heard only by the people next door, and is the son Rudy never had. At first, Richie hates leaving London, but he changes his mind: “In London I'm nobody. In Birmingham I'm from London. I'm exotic.”

Tasha (Natasha Godfrey) works in the shop. She's a Goth. When Adam plays Beethoven in the shop, she tells him to turn it off. “It's depressing. Listening to this I'd be more likely to fall asleep than self-harm.”

Chuck in Alison (Tracy-Ann Oberman), Adam's one-time love interest who is bound to be the love interest again, and sundry disreputable friends of the rascally Rudy, and you have the makings of something pretty unmissable over the next four weeks. Oh yes - and if the vintage reggae and ska songs used as links don't make you feel glad to be alive, then you're not.

"I'm loving Radio 4," Lenny Henry tells RT. And it's no surprise, really, as the network picked up an idea that he had for a comedy and developed it into this, his first radio sitcom. Set in a record shop in a run-down section of Handsworth in Birmingham, Henry plays Adam, a man who has disassociated himself from his past, moved to London and created a new life where he gorges himself silly on tofu and Tchaikovsky instead of stewed chicken and ska. But when his father Rudy (played by Larrington Walker) is taken ill he has to go home to run the family record shop, taking his teenage son Richie (played by Joe Jacobs) with him. "Adam felt scarred by his childhood," explains Lenny, "and took up the appreciation of classical music to help him make the break from his dad. He has his pretensions, but he's from Birmingham, so how snobby can he really be?"

As an actor Lenny Henry is rightly recognised for the physicality of his performances, so how does this work on the radio? "You animate your voice to suit the medium that you're in. I've voiced cartoon characters, after all, but this was really different. I had to do my homework and write a proper treatment before they'd let me anywhere near a studio. But do you know what? As a TV boy I feel very privileged to have been welcomed into the radio fraternity."
