Each novel's title makes a pun on the similarity between the word 'myth' and either the prefix 'mis-' or the word 'miss', with the exception of the first, which puns on the phrase 'Another fine mess' (which was, incidentally, almost the novel's title due to a misunderstanding with book's publisher).

In this book which is the first of the 'Myth' series of books by Robert Asprin, we are introduced to Skeeve who is a budding thief learning magic from Garlak on the world of Klah. Skeeve's life is turned upside down when Garlak is assassinated and Skeeve is left facing a demon. As it happens, the Demon is not your typical demon and actually is Garlak's friend from another dimension. Aahz is from the dimension of Perv (do not dare under any circumstances call Aahz a Pervert. The denizens of Perv prefer 'Pervect'; those who mis-speak tend to lose their lives) and is a master magician himself...except Garlak, as a practical joke, has caused Aahz to lose all his powers and since Garlak is dead, he can't restore them nor can he return home. Aahz agrees to continue Skeeve's training while investigating Garlak's murder. From here, a friendship is built which will continue for several more books.

Skeeve is from a backward dimension called Klah (residents are called Klahds, read 'clods') where technology is back at the medieval level. Aahz has been everywhere and readers will enjoy many inside jokes from our own pop culture.

Another great feature of the books is the quote that begins each chapter, usually expounding on one of life's great truths.

This series of books is tongue-in-cheek and if you can't take puns, this series is not for you.

It's great if you are looking for laughs and a good fantasy adventure.

The Myth series is a breathe of fresh air in the fantasy genre, even if it is over 20 years old. Asprin writes witty dialogue with a cast of characters you can't help but feel a part of.
