Amazon.com Review
Was there something more criminal than grand theft auto
involved in the disappearance of Nina Reilly's truck--and
the legal files locked inside it? When confidential information
from those files that could endanger Nina's clients and
destroy her reputation surfaces, it begins to look as though
someone wants to put the feisty Lake Tahoe attorney out of business.
There's no shortage of suspects, including a policewoman who
blames Nina for short-circuiting her promotion, a client with a
guilty secret who's convinced it was Nina's negligence that
lost his custody case, and a rival attorney who's seething over
all the high-profile clients he's lost because of Nina's growing
prominence. With help from her ex-husband, a legal malpractice
specialist, and her lover, who's also her investigator,
Reilly races the clock to get to the bottom of the smear campaign
and save her license to practice in this smart, sexy thriller
that makes the most of the author's gifts of clever plotting,
characterization, and dramatic tension. Reilly, a single mom whose
personal life is as chaotic as her career, is a series heroine who
gets more interesting with every new adventure. The conclusion of
this one, the author's eighth, finds Reilly pointed in a new
direction with plenty of interesting possibilities for the future.

From Publishers Weekly
Penned by sisters Pamela and Mary O'Shaughnessy, this eighth novel
to feature South Lake Tahoe attorney Nina Reilly puts the lawyer
in the defendant's chair. Ever since she was a little girl, Nina
has believed that rules are what people use to make sense of the
world and that law is a way of enforcing the rules to keep the
world sane. But when her truck is stolen, along with her three
most sensitive case files, her sane world turns topsy-turvy.
In the wrong hands, those files could compromise a client's chance
at fair visitation rights, affect a second client's insurance
claim and put two girls at risk from the murderer whose crime
they witnessed. Suddenly, Nina finds herself facing possible
disbarment as she's brought up on disciplinary charges before
the California State Bar Court. Current boyfriend Paul and
ex-husband Jack try to help Nina figure out who stole the files
and, more importantly, who is trying to destroy her life.
The initial setup of Nina's predicament is taut as a wire,
but the story bogs down in court, where much of the testimony,
while realistic, is filler: a space-occupying rehash of what
the reader already knows. As for the climax, it's so hokey
that the dialogue reads like an old Batman episode. Chances are,
though, since this is just a first offense, series fans will
release this effort on its own recognizance in the hopes that
the next case will be a winner.

From Publishers Weekly
When lawyer Nina Reilly muses while swimming at the start of this
book about how many years she has left to enjoy life's pleasures,
she startles us by the revelation that she is in her mid-thirties.
Is that all? The O'Shaughnessy sisters, Pamela and Mary, have packed
so much adventure, romance, crime and law into their books starring
Reilly that we'd swear she was at least 50. And their latest outing,
number nine, is no exception. Staying with her lover, investigator
Paul van Wagoner, in his Carmel Valley condo while she reexamines
her life after the traumatic events of 2002's Unfit to Practice
dislodged her from her South Lake Tahoe home and office, Reilly is
torn between Paul's obvious sexual appeal and his irksome urging
for some form of long-term commitment. Then the 21-year-old Native American
son of Nina's former secretary, Sandy Whitefeather, winds up in the
middle of a murder and arson investigation, and Nina and Paul barely
have a moment free for cuddling or bickering. Plotting has never been
an O'Shaughnessy strong suit (in an acknowledgment, the authors
mention an editor "who, with this book especially, has shown her
rare ability to catch the lags, the vagueness, and the illogic of
our manuscript"-a few glitches still slipped through).
But the series' real virtues are intact: well-rounded and likable
characters set against a richly described backdrop of some of the
loveliest country in the world.

"Nina Reilly is one of the most compelling heroines to come our way
- she's definitely a lawyer you'd want to have on your
side" JEFFERY DEAVER "Will keep you turning the pages into the
night" USA Today "A real puzzler, with twists diabolical enough
to take to court." New York Times Book Review --This text refers

From Publishers Weekly
In this 10th installment in O'Shaughnessy's series featuring spunky California
lawyer Nina Reilly (Motion to Suppress; Invasion of Privacy), Nina has moved
herself and 14-year-old son Bob from their usual Tahoe turf to the Monterey
Peninsula to spend time with her lover, PI Paul van Wagoner. Paul has asked
Nina to marry him, offering a big diamond to seal the deal. Nina puts him
off while she prepares for a big trial: she's newly employed at Pohlmann,
Cunningham, and Turk, and her first case, working with Klaus Pohlmann,
is defending 28-year-old Stefan Wyatt, charged with murder and grave robbing.
O'Shaughnessy has been accused of sloppy plotting in the past, but not so here.
Russian émigré Constantin Zhukovsky, dead more than 20 years, used to tell
friends and family of being a young page to Czar Nicholas II. Now the
deadly ramifications of these stories have rippled down to the present.
As for the damning evidence that Stefan's blood was found at the scene
of the murder? O'Shaughnessy comes up with the neatest solution to that
classic puzzle in recent thriller memory.

From Booklist
The popular sister duo behind the O'Shaughnessy pseudonym returns with
another tale about the legal battles Nina Reilly fights for her odd
assortment of clients. Away from her comfortable Lake Tahoe home and
practice, Nina finds herself in California wine country, helping an
old friend with a case. Nina's boyfriend, Paul von Wagoner, is just
as pleased as he can be, for Monterey is where he hopes Nina will
settle down with him as his wife. Nina has no time for such romantic
notions, however, as her attempt to defend one of the unluckiest young
men she has ever met is fraught with problems. Her client was caught
grave digging--something he readily admits to doing for some quick
cash--but he uncovered a second body that had been dumped in the grave,
and now he stands accused of murdering that interloper. Fake bomb scares,
an unhelpful Russian family, and untrusting colleagues all serve to
complicate matters for Nina but make this courtroom drama entertaining.
The key strength of this series is the pleasurable mix of a single
mother's struggle to find love and happiness with her talents at preparing
and trying cases. O'Shaughnessy fans will be pleased with this addition.

From Publishers Weekly
A math genius, a tough courtroom adversary and an even tougher
judge make the 11th legal thriller in the Nina Reilly series
(Unlucky in Law, etc.) the most intriguing yet. Back in
Lake Tahoe, Nina gets her next case from a masseuse whose
aunt was killed during a motel robbery. Unless Nina acts,
the lawsuit filed against the Ace High Lodge will be dismissed,
as no one has been able to locate the witnesses. Reluctant to
call on ex-lover PI Paul van Wagoner for help, Nina hires her
assistant's PI son, Wish, who discovers that the witnesses are
MIT students with a sideline counting cards. While the old case
takes on new life, people connected to it are threatened and worse.
O'Shaughnessy (lawyer Pamela and editor Mary O'Shaughnessy) takes
the reader inside the beautiful mind of emotionally immature,
occasionally delusional, quantitatively inspired Elliott Wakefield
as he solves equations, cares for his father and plays blackjack.
In thrillers as in math proofs, neatness counts. Here, the Internet
and national security bring Elliott's story to an almost too-neat
conclusion, while Nina ingeniously solves the problem of replacing
Paul in her personal life. As always, O'Shaughnessy keeps legal
procedure straight, language crisp and plot consistently absorbing.

From Booklist
David Hanna witnessed the murder of his wife (and her unborn fetus)
outside a hotel on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe. Now it's two years later,
and Hanna enlists the help of Nina Reilly, a formidable attorney of some
local notoriety (and star of 10 previous O'Shaughnessy adventures).
The plan is to hold the hotel accountable for its lack of security,
which made possible the robbery that produced the stray bullet that,
in turn, killed Hanna's wife. The perp was never caught, and the
three robbery victims, who Nina feels are the key to the case, have
been no help, purposely staying in California so that the Nevada
court has no jurisdiction over them. Nina's search for the truth
takes her all the way to Europe--and into the arms of her former husband.
O'Shaunessy (pseudonym for a sister team) has a knack for plotting and
for combining suspenseful action with a light and playful tone. Another
fine addition to an appealing and popular series. Mary Frances Wilkens
