Denn so manche interessante Erkenntnis über die letzten Minuten im Leben eines Menschen lässt sich aus seiner sterblichen Hülle gewinnen. Meistens jedenfalls.
Bei dem Serienmord an vier jungen Pärchen tappen Dr. Scarpetta und die Polizei dagegen immer noch im Dunkeln, denn die Leichen wurden jeweils erst Monate später gefunden, und die Opfer gaben nicht mehr viel vom Geheimnis ihres Todes preis. Bis dann ein fünftes Paar ermordet im Wald liegt - und das tote Mädchen ist ausgerechnet die Tochter von Staatsanwältin Pat Harvey, die sich im Kampf gegen Drogen einen Namen gemacht hat. Stehen also politische Motive im Vordergrund? Während sich die Presse voller Häme auf das Versagen der Ermittler stürzt, stellt Scarpetta fest, dass FBI Special Agent Benton Wesley wichtige Informationen zurückhält. Kommt der Täter etwa aus Camp Peary, dem Trainingszentrum der CIA, auf dessen Territorium die Morde geschahen? Den Schlüssel zur Lösung dieses Falls birgt eine Spielkarte, die bei allen Ermordeten gefunden wurde: ein Herzbube.
