Synopsis : (en) Dean Corso is a rare-book dealer. Corso is hired by the book collector Boris Balkan to authenticate The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows, a book by 17th century author Aristide Torchia, one of only three surviving copies, now in Balkan's possession. The book contains nine engravings which, when correctly deciphered and the interpretations properly spoken, are alleged to raise the Devil. Balkan suspects the book may be a forgery, and hires Corso to travel to Europe, assess the other two known copies (one copy is held by the Portuguese book collector Victor Fargas, and the other by Baroness Kessler in France), discover whether any are genuine, and if so, acquire them for Balkan at any cost.

Synopsis : (fr) Dean Corso est un checheur de livres rares. Il est engagé par le collectionneur Boris Balkan afin d'authentifier le livre Les Neuf Portes du Royaume des Ombres, un livre écrit au XVIIe siècle par l'auteur Aristide Torchia. Le livre de Balkan est l'une des trois copies ayant survécues à un incendie. Le livre contient neuf gravures qui, si elles sont correctement décrites et si leurs interprétations sont justes, permettent d'appeler Lucifer sur Terre. Balkan suspecte le livre d'être un faux, il demande à Corso de voyager en Europe, d'évaluer les deux autres copies connues (l'une est détenue par le collectionneur portugais Victor Fargas et l'autre par la baronne Kessler en France), déterminer si elles sont authentiques, et si oui, les acquérir pour Balkan à n'importe quel prix.
