Back in 1993, this 3 part documentary film was made by
The Independent's then Beirut correspondent Robert Fisk
(for Channel 4 and the Discovery Channel).
It explored the question why an increasing number of
Muslims had come to hate the West. Filming locations
were Beirut, Southern Lebanon, Israel, the West Bank
and Gaza, Egypt, Poland, Bosnia and Croatia.

Part I - The Martyr's Smile:
This part deals with the guerilla war aiming to liberate
southern Lebanon from Israeli control (now no longer
occupied by Israel). Robert Fisk travels through warstruck
Lebanon, watches rallies, revisits the site of the Sabra
and Shatila massacre. He talks to the mother of dead
Hezbollah fighter, Hezbollah Leader Nasrallah, victims of
house destruction and indiscriminate fire, doctors in the
fire zone, UN peace corps members, active Hezbollah fighters,
a former prisoner of the Israeli jail in Lebanon and a Red
Part II - The Road to Palestine:
The Road to Palestine provides a glimpse into the ongoing
conflict in the region around Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.
Through interviews with Palestinian refugees, the wife of
Palestinian border guard executed by Hamas, a member of
Hamas, Zionist settlers in Gaza, a Jewish survivor of the
Nazi horror, Palestinian farmers threatened by eviction from
their land and their lawer, this documentary tries to reveal
some causes of the muddled state of affairs and the vicious
cycle of violence.
Part III - To the Ends of the Earth:
To the Ends of the Earth compares the plight of Muslims in
Egypt and Bosnia. Though separated by geography and the
distinct cultures, this video shows that there is a strong
feeling of being abandoned by the West. In Egypt a secular
government rules with an iron fist openly opposed only by
the Islamists. On the other end of what used to be the
Ottoman Empire Bosnia was just ablaze with the Yugoslav war
where slavs were killing slavs seemingly just because they
adhered to a different faith while a large UN presence there
did at the time not really intervene.
