It was a rainy afternoon in 2004. Comedian Robin Ince thought he had nothing to fear. But he was wrong. A pipe blocked with chicken fat (not of his own consumption) erupted in his basement flat and the vinyl record collection that he'd loved and cherished since his teens was destroyed by a slurry of stinking goo. As he worked his way through the remnants, he realised that he could rememberwhere he'd bought each record. This programme recounts his attempts to replace some of his collection, but also asks if the proper pop fan still exists since the demise of the singles chart. "For people of my generation [he's 39], music defined our attitude, our haircut, our trousers and our opinions." It's a programme packed with pop facts, nostalgia and comedy. But there's also a note of genuine melancholy when his favourite record shop shuts because students prefer ringtones to albums. The Smiths could have written a song about that.
