Chain Reaction - Series 4
Chain Reaction gives the audience two entertainers for the price of one on a series that is spontaneous, revealing and very funny. Dispensing with the formality of a regular host, last week’s interviewee become this week’s interviewer instead. It is tag-team interviewing with some of the brightest stars of the entertainment field.
Recorded in front of an audience, this fourth series is a four parter, with some of the biggest names from the world of entertainment interviewing others whose work they appreciate and admire. The interviews focused on the life, career and the passions of the interviewee but often proved to be as revealing about the interviewer.
Each interviewer has a different style and each pairing has its own unique rapport; a simple idea for a highly entertaining series.
1/4 The talk show with a twist begins with Catherine Tate playing host to interview - or mercilessly tease David Tennant about growing up a science fiction fan, his love of acting and his success as Dr. Who.
2/4 David Tennant tries his hand at interviewing as he poses the questions to fellow Scottish actor Richard Wilson in part two of the tag-team talk show series. David asks Richard about his gruesome time in National Service, champagne socialism, and overcoming his shyness to become an actor.
3/4 One Foot in the Grave’s Richard Wilson turns interviewer and questions the comedy actress Arabella Weir about the trials and tribulations of working with The Fast Show boys, her catchphrase 'Does my Bum Look Big in This' and earning her stripes with her first job in show business: Gladioli arranger for Barry Humphries.
4/4 Its Arabella's turn now and she chooses Paul Whitehouse. She asks Paul about Down the Line, his competitive relationship with Harry Enfield, his favourite Fast Show creations and his comic inspirations.
From the Radio Times
It is as if the President of the Immortals has entered the theatre as Catherine Tate introduces her special guest. But for the Whovians who have gathered to hear this interview, David Tennant does have a God-like status.
Mercifully, his amiable personality does not appear to have been affected by all this worship and his responses to Tate's left-of-centre interrogations prove him to be just as quick-witted and funny as his loquacious interlocutor.
They chat briefly about working together on Doctor Who, but the best laughs come from their shared experience of playing extras on ITV's The Bill. Catherine Tate was required to shout "He's round the back of the estate" every time she appeared. David Tennant, meanwhile, got to play a serial killer and deliver possibly the worst line in the history of screenwriting: "We're all dealt a hand of cards. Some good, some bad. I'm a killer."
Next week the chain continues with Tennant interviewing actor Richard Wilson.
