COMPUTE!'s Gazette Compilation (1984-1995)
Computer Game Magazine for users of the Commodore 64 and VIC-20

I hope you find this compilation of Commodore-specific magazines as exciting as I do. Its long publishing run is indicative of the long-lived popularity of the Commodore 64 personal computer.

I used to subscribe to this magazine back in the day, when I was a young boy with a Commodore VIC-20 and later a Commodore 64. I have fond memories of typing in code for the games that were in every magazine, browsing the advertisements and eagerly awaiting the next issue.

This was a gamer's magazine, but it was no fluff rag filled with corny reviews, Xtreeeme! CG covers, Doritos ads and pop lingo -- it was a pure computer game magazine in the days before everyone had a computer, and targeted towards people who wanted the satisfaction of typing in their own games (Commodore systems had built in BASIC from the start up prompt), and maybe making a few personal changes to them, learning programming techniques along the way. (Yes, "Personal Computer" gamers were much more geeky back then)

The actual type-in games in the magazines were never anywhere near as complex as commercial games such as, say, The Last Ninja or the Ultimas, but were great as learning tools and could occasionally be quite addictive.

]What was Compute's Gazette?

COMPUTE!'s Gazette was a spin-off of COMPUTE! magazine. While COMPUTE! covered computers in addition to Commodores, COMPUTE!'s Gazette was Commodore-specific.

COMPUTE!'s Gazette was published from July 1983 to February 1995. It started publishing companion disks in April 1984. Between October 1990 and December 1993 it was combined with COMPUTE! in a separate section of the magazine. It then switched to a disk-only magazine format in January 1994 and ceased publishing with the February 1995 issue.

This torrent is one that I found recently on a web search, simply titled "Compute's Gazette" and without any detail in the description. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it contains an ISO file packed with article scans (from what I can tell) including just about every issue of Compute's Gazette the printed magazine from 1983-1991 along with other apps and disks, up to 1995. The compilation is well indexed if you are looking for something specific.

The compilation credits Jeremy Sieracki and Bruce Thomas and is well put together, small enough to burn and archive for your future enjoyment on an inexpensive CD-R.

Contents:

- COVERS
- INDEX
- Magazine Article Scans 1983-1991
- Automatic Proofreader
- Best of Compute and Gazette
- Gazette Disks all the way to 1995
- Gazette Games
- Gazette GEOS
- Gazette Type-ins
- MLX

Notes: The scans are not cover to cover magazine scans (I recall the issues were actually quite thick with all of the code) but rather appear to be focused on descriptions of the included programs; and, as in the above screenshot, it gets specific as to what the lines of code actually do.

Advertisements, reviews and non program-related articles appear left out for the most part unless they bleed over onto the same page as a program article. The many pages/lines of code are substituted by .D64 "disks" with the completed code / programs on them, rather than magazine scans.

Still, there are several advertisements peppered throughout, and references to the Commodore 128, Commodore Plus/4, and other lesser known Commodore components and systems - though I have only skimmed through the articles and covers so far - so much to read!
