Robot Wars, SkyNet, The Beast And The False Prophet
It's been said that given enough time, technology eventually
catches up to science fiction. For example, during the first
part of the twentieth century, only a person deemed a fool
would dare to claim that someday man would land on the moon.
The last seventy years or so have witnessed an unprecedented
increase in man's knowledge of scientific principles. This
has resulted in a plethora of new discoveries and inventions
which have both enhanced our lives, as well as made them more
dangerous. On one hand, man has found the cure to a number of
deadly diseases, while on the other, he has also foolishly
created nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. With the
scalpel he heals, while with bombs and guns he destroys life.
One product of the modern era of technology that has enhanced
many of our lives is the computer. It has been estimated that
by the middle of this current century, computers will be just
as smart as, or smarter than, human beings. If this turns out
to be true, what then? Will laws be passed, and safeguards put
in place, to ensure that this technology is not abused?
Other scientific advances are now being made in the fields of
robotics and cybernetics. The clunky robots of the "Lost In
Space" generation have now made way for intelligent machines
which are capable of exploring Antarctica, the Moon, Mars,
the moons of Jupiter and beyond.
The extremely popular "Terminator" movie franchise offers us
a dark picture of the future, where computer technology and
robotics have been wed, creating a sinister force, (SkyNet),
which is intent on the complete destruction of humankind. Of
course, we all realize that this is just science fiction. It
could never happen in real life, could it?
This article addresses this issue, and related issues, and
offers a glimpse of what our future may really hold for us.
Is science fiction once again about to become reality?
