Spec Ops - Airborne Commando
by Gotham Games -- 2002
Spec Ops: Airborne Commando is an isometric action game where you as a player, control a lone soldier through 16 levels of shooting and using high-tech equipment. Levels span from hostage rescuing to mayhem & destruction and from urban environments to jungles. Very similar to other games of Spec-Ops family.
Covert Assault, another installment of the Spec Ops franchise, offers up action for one or two players to control US Army Rangers, in 3rd-person missions and combat across four different locations. At the beginning of each mission, you choose a two-man team from a group of six rangers. Each has different qualities (a sniper, a gunner, a grenadier), so you need to compose a team fit for the specific task, with more than 10 weapons available.
Singleplayer mode permits the player to control the ranger and his buddy at the same time. Two-player offers cooperative split-screen play. The emphasis is on tactical play, although there's plenty of action.
Spec Ops: Stealth Patrol is a game that tries to mix the realistic art of tactical warfare with elements of an action game. The end result is a game that looks and feels like a typical action game but punishes you for trying to play it as such since the AI and missions require you to use more tactics than bullets.
At the beginning of each level, you must choose two rangers to control from a team of five. Each of the rangers is skilled in various forms of combat - some are better with a shotgun at close quarters while others are better suited to sniping from a distance. Understanding each of the ranger's special skills makes choosing the correct team for a particular mission one of the keys to success in the game.
Each of the five stages in the game takes you to a different location where there is a political situation that needs to be rectified by force. Once your rangers are on the scene, it's up to you to guide the two-man team to victory. Some missions are the standard "shoot everyone you see and go home" type, while others are more involved and objective-based. Some of the more difficult missions require you to slip behind enemy lines and plant explosives while avoiding enemy detection.
Spec Ops - Ranger Elite is one of those first generation soldier shooters, that was one of the first games to emphazise tactics before total mayhem.
This game lets you lead a kind of special forces which you chose out of a bigger group, like in Hidden and Dangerous. The difference in this game is that it's somewhat more action, and that it's played in third-person view.
The game takes you to several places of the earth, where you have to complete the mission objectives rather than just killing everyone (though completing missions often is about killing) to win the game.
