Preview (September 16, 2005):
Genki has a thing for making absolutely cool concepts with their games. Tokyo Xtreme Racer is a prime example of that. Who would've thought of a racing game where you actually mimic what happens in a real-life street race? Ikusagami is an action game in the same vein as Koei's Dynasty Warriors, with the exception that Genki proclaims that you can have up to 65,535 enemies on the screen all at the same time. Yes, that's the exact number, and Genki is proud to state that number every time the game is mentioned, so we figured it'd be a good idea to say it again. 65,535 enemies at the same time.

The character that you play is named Inugami, a powerful warrior with the head of a lion and an extremely high proficiency in the art of butt-kickin'. The controls in the game are fairly simple to understand. You have your Square and Triangle buttons doing most of the work for you, providing you with weak and strong attacks, respectively. By chaining together a series of attacks, you can easily clear out a hundred enemies at once if you're surrounded. But not 65,535 enemies at once. You have one stamina bar that acts as a limiter for your area clearing attacks, but you can press R1 and Inugami will go into a frenzy, with the ability to swath a path through enemies like a finger reaching for the bra strap.

Initial fears that the game might be too boring can be put to rest though. Although the demo was only five minutes long, and had you in a time attack mode against said 65,535 enemies, the trailer showed off a completely different game than the demo we tried. In the trailer, Inugami is seen fighting alongside other warriors against the aforementioned enemies. In one scenario you can see Inugami's allies storming a castle, while he fights off another legion of enemies himself. We're not too sure if this indicates some sort of simulation-style elements like the Dynasty Warriors series has recently implemented, but either way, it looks like the single player mode is going to be more than just killing the same, mindless enemies over and over again.

Despite the fact that the game is pushing 65,535 enemies on the screen at the same time (if you haven't figured it out by now, every paragraph in this article will be using that number), the graphics were surprisingly good. Sure, the time attack mode consisted of a bowl shaped crater with brown and a whole bunch of enemies, but the trailer showed some amazingly detailed architecture for some of the surroundings, and the game is still throwing around a deluge of characters on the screen, both good and evil.

Unfortunately the demo only gave us a glimpse of what the final game is going to offer gamers. Five minutes simply wasn't enough to explore the entire system in detail, and although the trailer shown with the game shows a lot of promise, we were hoping for something more fleshed out than killing 65,535 enemies in five minutes. However, the potential is definitely there, but gamers will have to wait until November to see how the game turns out.
