Background - What is Master of Monsters?

MOM is a turn-based strategy game from System Soft (now System Soft Alpha), the same Japanese software house that makes the incredibly deep and long popular Daisenryaku modern wargame series. Many versions have been ported around to different platforms over the years, each with their own flavor - some deeper than others, and some more graphics or story oriented. At its heart, MOM is a strategy game utilizing Fantasy/RPG-type units, with an emphasis on the strategy. The Playstation version was notable for having a strong role-playing aspect and anime-style art, while the Japanese PC9801 versions were generally more straight strategy with a loose story to tie a series of challenging maps together.

Most of the Master of Monsters games were and continue to be released in Japan only, but a few versions made it overseas. I have included the versions which were in English for the (1998) PSX and (1991) Genesis (notable for an excellent soundtrack), along with MSX, PC8801, PC9801, PC Engine, and Saturn versions of the game. There are a few missing from the PC9801 collection, and perhaps a few "safe" old DOS/V or Japanese Windows versions out there that I'd like to get a hold of, but have been evasive so far.

Gameplay:

Basic gameplay concepts common to the many versions of MOM are:

1. Summon monsters close to your alignment (easier to control)
2. Take over towers to replenish summoning/magic points
3. Level up and protect your best monsters as you go though the campaigns
3. Defeat the other "Master(s)" on the maps.

Depending on the platform or game, there can be other additional features such as "merging" monsters in shrines for more powerful (or weak mistake-bred) monsters. Weapons also might be equipped in some versions of the game for summoned Barbarians, Elves or Amazons, for instance. Masters themselves might level up or equip items as well.

A few English walkthrus can be found around the web for the Genesis and PSX versions of the game.

Newer, updated versions for Windows (and cell phones!) of the MOM games are still being made and offered by System Soft Alpha in Japan. For instance, MOM III "Special Edition" here: http://www.ss-alpha.co.jp/products/mm3.html Or a "Value Edition" of the first MOM (which I recently purchased). Microsoft App Locale tool required for play, of couse.

Lacking Japanese skills for the non-English ports/versions?:

With enough experience playing the English versions of the game and a rudimentary knowledge of getting around in a Japanese game, the others, like the Saturn version, should be playable. Of the more complex ones, I have a screenshot or two - for instance, in Master of Monsters Final - The Rings of Twilight (a personal favorite), this is how one would get started (I use the T98-Next emulator):
