I've tried two other previous rips of this game, and the performance just wasn't satisfactory. I began with the PAL DCP rip, and it was the worst. The music and the voices were stuttering 95% of the time. You were lucky if a sentence was ever completed.
I then tried a rip of the USA region, thanks to Fitzmarcade uploading it. It was quite a bit better, but still had some audio stutters in the races, and quite a lot in the menus. It was improved due to it's logical file organization (physical placement order on the disc), as well as the fact that the USA version does not have to offer Dutch, German, and Italian voice acting.
Having considered all this, I decided to take the game a step further. I began with the PAL release by DCP. I copied it file-for-file. I then replaced all the foreign audio and FMV with 1KB dummy files, since erasing the files completely would, at the very least, complicate things considering the file order (sorttxt.txt). I kept every language's font files, just in case the game loads them all simultaneously at any point, to avoid crashes.
I then tweaked the physical file order just a bit, to make sure that the time-sensitive pieces were pushed out to the edge of the iso, for easier loading during matches. This included the music and the English voice acting.
I then added a 394MB dummy file. This further enhances performance by making sure no game data is occupying the slow area of the disc. A small dummy file also replaces where the IP.BIN file originally was on the old release, just as a shortcut to re-writing the sorttxt.txt. Just ignore it. IP.BINs serve no purpose as files in self-booted releases, because they are instead written inside the header.
So again, this should be the best performing version of the game you will ever download. It's either this, or buy the game for real. I want to assure you that absolutely no English content was down-sampled or removed in any way, despite the much smaller compressed size.
Yes, this release will boot in emulators like Chankast, but getting your emulators to fully work with it is another story. I got demul to display half the graphics, but Chankast will lock-up after the intro video.
Always remember to burn to good quality media, and ensure your Dreamcast's lens is clean. I've been testing this release and the only stutter or audio delay that I experience is if I fly through the menus very fast. This is as good as it can get.
As long as you DO NOT change the Language option from English to anything else, the game will run great, and present the full experience! Enjoy this awesome racing game the way it was meant to be played!
