These Japanese concerts give us a first-hand look at this quintet in full force. Perhaps because they were not originally intended for release as albums, we hear the unbridled live Coltrane without regard for tune lengths and with no limitations put on his experimentation in solo flight. These concerts are a wonderful opportunity to hear an aspect of John Coltrane's music that was rarely documented.
Discs I and II were recorded at Shinjuku Kosei Nenkin Hall in Tokyo on July 11, 1966. Discs III and IV were recorded at Sankei Hall in Tokyo on July 22, 1966. These recordings are mono and were originally taped for Japanese radio broadcast. Reissue produced by Michael Cuscuna. Mastered by Robert Stoughton at MCA Studios, CA. Post-Production by Michael Landy and Joseph Doughney at the Review Room/NYC.
