Torrent description

A Christmas Carol

It is so much better than any of the many movie versions that I have seen!!
A wonderful wonderful story, timeless, and beautiful, and haunting.
I can't recommend this book highly enough.
-----------------------------------------------------
Carnacki The Ghost Finder

I'll echo the other rave reviews for this one,
a lovely collection of chilling ghost/haunting stories,
where Carnathi is an informed sceptic,
willing to believe in the supernatural
and protect himself from same with various rituals,
yet also on the look-out for hoaxes (some of which are inspired,
as you will see). The "stories after dinner"
approach of each chapter works well and the haunted bits are pretty scary,
much detail and not one to read too late at night!
-----------------------------------------------------
In the Closed Room

There's something very warm and compelling about the writing of Francis Hodgson Burnett.
In The Secret Garden, for example, we have a children's story that adults can understand
as an allegory that works on social, spiritual, and sexual levels.
No Victorian writer understands the secret worlds and sensitivities of children better.
"In the Closed Room" is a little gem of a story,
a beautiful ghost story that is ultimately a meditation up death.
Those who don't understand the Victorian mindset, as usual,
will not find this to their liking; but for me,
the foundational values that nourished the Victorians often make for refreshing reading today.
-----------------------------------------------------
Inferences from Haunted Houses and Haunted Men

Imagine, if you will, living in a post-Victorian world being harassed
and vandalized by groups of evil, criminal hypnotists and ventriloquists
that can put you into an insane asylum, make you think your house is haunted,
or even kill you! Add the Jesuits and the Freemasons into the mix and the result is a delightful,
rambling, sometimes incoherent, paranoid descent into serious, pseudo-scientific lunacy.

This is fun.

However, do remember that at one time hypnotism was considered an occult art
(called mesmerism) to the point people considered assault by criminal hypnotists
a genuine reality and it was expressed in the literature and films of the day
(The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, 1919 and Svengali, 1931).

The fear of criminal hypnotists continues today, but we have modernized the legend into tales of alien abduction.
-----------------------------------------------------
Kwaidan

Have you ever wondered where The Ring (Ringu) or The Grudge
got the idea for the ghost with the long hair covering her dead eyes?

This is it.

Among the best of all unsung horror collections of all time.
-----------------------------------------------------
The Abbots Ghost A Christmas

I LOVE The Abbots Ghost. It is an excellant book.
I would recomend it to anyone without hesitation.
-----------------------------------------------------
The Book of Dreams and Ghost

The chief purpose of this book is,
if fortune helps, to entertain people interested in the kind of narratives here collected.
For the sake of orderly arrangement,
the stories are classed in different grades,
as they advance from the normal and familiar to the undeniably startling.
At the same time an account of the current theories of Apparitions is offered,
in language as free from technicalities as possible.
According to modern opinion every “ghost” is a “hallucination,”
a false perception, the perception of something which is not present.
-----------------------------------------------------
The Canterville Ghost

I have seen this on dvd too very nice fantasy!

An amusing chronicle of the tribulations of the Ghost of Canterville Chase
-----------------------------------------------------
The Ghost Pirates

"Ghost Pirates" is the tale of a ship surrounded in mystery.
The story is explored through the experiences of the narrator "Jessop".
He joins the ship for a return journey to England, knowing beforehand
that strange things have happened previously. Most of the crew has left
the ship, only one sailor is left who has knowledge of the goings-on,
but is not keen to elaborate.

As the journey home unfolds, strange things appear at night,
benign at first; but then things start to go amiss high-up in the rigging.

One of my most favourite parts, was the chase-down of something up in the sails
during the dead of night. Sailors scramble up with only the meagre the light
of a lantern, and the blue-white blaze of an occasional, frantically lit flare.
Up and up the go, forcing back the darkness and unknown, only to find more than they bargined for.

At times I felt a bit confused interpreting the written accents of a few of the sailors,
in particular (what I think was) the Scottish ones. Also the book jumps straight into sail
and rigging terminology I had no idea of, but you quickly learn that "the royal" is one of the sails,
and similiarly for other terms
-----------------------------------------------------
The Ghost Whistle

Reminiscent of Manly Wade Wellman's style of the Silver John stories,
The Ghost Whistle is the story of Bob Holman, a murderous rascal of
a Blue Ridge Mountain hillbilly who loses his beloved railroad engineer
son in a train accident.

Committed to revenge, one night he hears the whistle of the train blowing
in the manner his son used to blow for him. Is it a sign, a coincidence,
or a sign from his son from beyond the grave?
when his ancestral halls became the home of the American Minister to the Court of St. James.

Enjoy!
