Complete Marvel Chronology 1966 07-12

1966 - Marvel Hits The Big-Time (Part 2)

Black Panther

The Sixties saw a major cultural revolution with the rise in awareness of the unacceptable situation of the black minority in the US.

In his own small way, Stan Lee contributed to the change in thinking and introduced Marvel's first black Super Hero - the Black Panther.

Not just another face in the street, T'Challa is the King of Wakanda, an African nation with wealth and the technology to rival the West, he is also intelligent and has great strength.

The character would be re-named the Black Leopard for a while due to the the Black Panthers, a political action group. He was called the Black Panther again in the Seventies.

Return of the Red Skull

Captain America's nemesis dating back to WWII, the Red Skull was first featured in the new Marvel Age in reprints of the Forties stories and also in new stories in Cap's own series, in new stories set in WWII.

The Red Skull makes his return in the Sixties as a result of suspended animation and will become Cap's continual enemy right up until the events that lead to the death of Steve Rogers.

Face It, Tiger...

After two years, Peter Parker, and the readers, finally get to meet Mary Jane Watson properly, and not just obscurely.

Beautifully drawn by new Spider-Man artist John Romita, in a way that Steve Ditko wouldn't, Peter Parker's cast of characters was finally complete for the foreseeable future.

Sales of Amazing Spider-Man were on a steep rise, fueled by the new art and the new relationships Peter Parker was having.

Green Goblin Revealed

In addition to the unveiling of MJ, on a darker note came the revelation of who was the Green Goblin, not only was he the father of Peter Parker's best friend but also a powerful, and quite insane, businessman capable of achieving anything he wanted.

It is only a matter of time before Norman Osborn will cause untold devastation to Parker's life.

And Making Their Debut

The Rhino - the first villain created by the new team of Stan Lee and John Romita (Amazing Spider-Man 041)

Ego the Living Planet - another super-size creation from Lee and Kirby, Ego is a self-aware planet in the Black Galaxy. (Thor 132)

Super-Adaptoid - created by AIM (Advanced Idea Mechanics) and able to assume the skills and powers of anyone near it, this was a real test for Captain America. (Tales of Suspense 082)

Klaw - with the power to change sound into solid objects, Klaw would be responsible for the death of the Black Panther's father, and a formidable foe. (Fantastic Four 053)

Sons of the Serpent - Stan Lee and Don Heck bring truly real-world problems to the Marvel Universe with the Sons of the Serpent, a group not unlike the real bigoted racists, such as the Ku Klux Klan or White Supremacists, who detest anyone from outside the USA and who who do not share their restricted views. (Avengers 032)

Living Laser - making use of the new laser technology, the Living Laser is a mercenary who would usually work with other villains, notably the Masters of Evil and the Lethal Legion. (Avengers 034)

Gladiator - owner of a costume shop, this villain went all out with the Gladiator costume and became a constant foe for Daredevil. (Daredevil 018 )

Notable Events

Steve Ditko leaves Marvel in 1966, Stan Lee only finding out from Sol Brodsky. Lee and Ditko hadn't spoken in months, and Ditko would send his artwork in without any script or plot from Lee.

There are suggestions that Ditko was unhappy with the light touch Lee gave to what Ditko saw as more serious stories and that Ditko wasn't pleased with the addition of the sound effects placed over his art.

His final work was in Amazing Spider-Man 038, and the Dr Strange story in Strange Tales 146.

The origin of the Howling Commandos is revealed in Sgt Fury 034.

The original Human Torch is featured in the Fantastic Four Annual 004, having been featured previously in reprints from the Golden Age. This story would feature a classic fight between the original Torch and Johnny Storm.

Spider-Man joins the Avengers, or he would if he could defeat the Hulk. He doesn't.

It is not until the Eighties that he joins the Avengers, and then in 2006 when Spidey would join the New Avengers.

About the Complete Marvel Chronology

The Complete Marvel Chronology (CMC) is version 2.0 of the Marvel Chronology (MC).

The MC was created by cyager69 aka Chuck, who uploaded Marvel comics beginning with Fantastic Four 001 (Nov 61) through to the issues published in Jun 1997.

When Chuck was unable to continue the uploads I took over the MC and uploaded the remainder of the issues through to December 2008. Additional uploads added various titles not cover-dated with a specific month (the 'Decades' uploads) and seven Fill packs added new scans for issues missing when the original uploads were done for the 70's through to the 90's.

With none of Chuck's original uploads online, the decision was to either upload the original version of 1961-1996 or go with a brand new, full version incorporating the missing genres, such as romance, western and humour, and including the imprints which Chuck intended to upload following the completion of the MC.

The CMC will cover Marvel's entire seventy year history. At present I am uploading the years beginning with 1960 and these uploads will continue right through to December 1996. After that I have not finalised what will follow, but the likelihood will be that I go back to upload the 39-59 period, and then upload the 97-09 period again. When I do upload version 2.0 of 97-09 there will be many additions and many new scans.

News and Notes

1966 07-12 sees the completion of the year 1966, all titles are scanned and nearly all are full c2c issues.

Marvel Collector's Item Classics 001 is listed in the 1965 00-06 folder dated 196502. This is incorrect, the correct date should be 196500.

The issue was actually released on 5th October 1965, with no cover-date other than 1965. This would be in line with the practice of comics having a 'future' cover-date so that shop owners knew when to remove the issue from the shelves. They would take this issue off the shelves at the end of December, three months after it first appeared.

Thanks to lmonolith who pointed this out, and also offered some excellent detective work to suggest a cover-date of Dec65 or Jan66 which would tie in to the second issue having a cover-date of April 1966.

Interestingly, both the Overstreet Price Guide and the UHBMCC website list the title in Feb65, which is where I have copied the error over from.

Marvel Value Stamps appeared in the 196600 upload. Oops! This wasn't issued until 1974, I have confirmed that with Nerone's Marvel spreadsheet, so I will amend the text description for the Handbook and I will include the files again in the 197400 upload.

Thanks to bluejet and defense1798 for spotting this.

Patsy Walker v1 124 is listed in the text description for 196512 but the front cover is not included in the files, that is always done with all missing issues.

The issue has now been scanned and will be included with several others in the Sixties Fill Pack, which will immediately follow the uploads for 1969, so I won't add the cover in the meantime.

Thanks to Chuck for spotting that one.

Coming Next

The next upload will be at the weekend with the complete 1967, in two enormous uploads.

This will be the last year to appear in two parts, starting with 1968 there will be three uploads per year.

Enjoy today's comics, please keep seeding, and I'll see you at the weekend for the complete 1967.

Pete
