When Stan Lee created the Fantastic Four the instruction to copy what DC had done with the Justice League was ignored and Lee created a new set of characters. When Marvel got the go-ahead from the distributors to add two new bi-monthly titles Lee took heed of the fan's requests to team up the solo characters and create a team of Marvel's biggest new stars. Thus the Avengers was born.
Thor, Iron Man, Ant-Man and Wasp were joined by the Hulk, who had lost his regular title.
The second new bi-monthly title to appear featured the X-Men - Cyclops, Beast, Angel, Iceman and Marvel Girl, all 'gifted students' at Professor Xavier's school.
Unlike the other heroes who all gained their powers externally, the X-Men were born with their powers which became apparent in their teens.
Because humanity can be fearful of change this easily gave rise to many stories with the X-Men having to deal with hatred and prejudice.
Also introduced in this issue is Magneto, who would initially lead the Evil Mutants but eventually he became the greatest threat to the team.
This first issue also introduces the Danger Room, where the X-Men would test their skills.
Strange Tales already featured the Human Torch, and Lee saw the opportunity to double the popularity of the title by adding a second Super Hero feature instead of the two five-page short stories.
Dr Strange was chosen with Lee choosing a magician as the star of the stories.
Unlike most of the new Super Heroes, Dr Strange's first story ( in Strange Tales 110) isn't his origin. The origin story would not appear until issue 115.
Steve Ditko produced the first story without any outline or script.
Tales to Astonish 044 introduces the Wasp aka Janet van Dyne, who would first partner Ant-Man and later marry Hank Pym.
The Wasp is also a Charter member of the Avengers.
In Amazing Spider-Man 003 Dr Octopus is introduced and is the first villain to defeat Spidey on their first meeting.
The two characters have many similarities - shy, with scientific minds, uneasy with women and both received powers from radiation accidents. Octopus is almost like an older version of Peter Parker, without Peter Parker's sense of responsibility.
Doc Ock would make many appearances and is one of Spidey's greatest enemies.
Tales of Asgard
Taking the same decision as he did with adding Dr Strange in Strange Tales, Lee introduced a second regular feature in Journey into Mystery 097 - Tales of Asgard.
The stories were set in the past featuring Thor and the other Asgardians in their pre-Don Blake adventures.
• Baron Mordo appears for the first time in Strange Tales 111 and will be a thorn in Dr Strange's side.
• Iron Man's long-time foe Jack Frost first appeared in Tales of Suspense 045 but changes his name later to Blizzard.
• The Sandman makes his first appearance in Amazing Spider-Man 004. He will also become a member of the Frightful Four taking on the Fantastic Four. Although he later becomes a member of both the Wild Pack and the Avengers, he will return to crime.
• Ant-Man becomes Giant-Man in Tales to Astonish.
• Sub-Mariner finally finds his people and his home Atlantis in the first Fantastic Four Annual.
• Super-Skrull appears for the first time in Fantastic Four 020
• The Lizard, and his human counterpart Dr Curtis Connors, first appears in Amazing Spider-Man 006.

About the Complete Marvel Chronology
The Complete Marvel Chronology (CMC) is version 2.0 of the Marvel Chronology (MC).
The MC was created by cyager69 aka Chuck, who uploaded Marvel comics beginning with Fantastic Four 001 (Nov 61) through to the issues published in Jun 1997.
When Chuck was unable to continue the uploads I took over the MC and uploaded the remainder of the issues through to December 2008. Additional uploads added various titles not cover-dated with a specific month (the 'Decades' uploads) and seven Fill packs added new scans for issues missing when the original uploads were done for the 70's through to the 90's.
With none of Chuck's original uploads online, the decision was to either upload the original version of 1961-1996 or go with a brand new, full version incorporating the missing genres, such as romance, western and humour, and including the imprints which Chuck intended to upload following the completion of the MC.
The CMC will cover Marvel's entire seventy year history. At present I am uploading the years beginning with 1960 and these uploads will continue right through to December 1996. After that I have not finalised what will follow, but the likelihood will be that I go back to upload the 39-59 period, and then upload the 97-09 period again. When I do upload version 2.0 of 97-09 there will be many additions and many new scans.
News and Notes
Here is the second installment of titles from 1963 covering the six months from July to December.
Next up will be the titles from January 2009, including the final chapters of the Secret Invasion. More on that in the torrent. Should be up Wednesday.
With the multiple seeding from the start, thanks guys!, there were 20 seeds after a few hours yesterday. Not bad for a 1.5gb upload.
A couple of things I didn't mention yesterday -
When the 69 upload is done all the information (and probably a little more) that is included in the torrent description will be added together and uploaded in the first volume of the Complete Marvel Chronology Handbook - The Sixties.
It will include the covers (which are of the scans not stock covers) shown in the torrent as well as the background info on the year's events and all the statistics for each title that appear.
So you will have a record, all in one place, of all the titles uploaded in the period 1960-1969.
Also, to answer one comment (and thanks, btw, for all the comments - I really appreciate them)
All the imprints will be included in the CMC -
Epic, Malibu, Star, Marvel UK, Razorline and Frontier. Max, Soleil, Dabel Brothers and Icon all appeared in the MC but will be included in the CMC of course.
While I have the stats in front of me, one of the reasons I haven't started at the beginning in 1939 with the CMC is because although there are 2710 scanned issues from the Timely-Atlas era, there are still 2579 unscanned issues (as at 1st July 2009).
New scans are appearing regularly so hopefully by the end of the year the 1939-1959 uploads will have fewer fc only issues than they would today.
Enjoy today's comics, please keep seeding and look out for Jan '09.
Books used as research material in completing the CMC include -
Marvel Chronicle - Tom DeFalco
Marvel Vault - Roy Thomas and Pete Sanderson
Tales of the Implosion - Tom Lammers
Standard Catalogue of Comic Books 5th Edition
Thanks to all the scanners, editors and uploaders who make the scans available.
Thanks for the support of all those who seed the CMC.
