The conquest of Martin Goodman's Timely-Atlas comics by Marvel's new Super Heroes is completed in 1963.
Firstly, the last of the monster books becomes a super hero title when Tales of Suspense 039 introduces Iron Man.
Then, three new titles bring into print some of the most iconic titles in all of comics history - Spider-Man, X-Men and the Avengers.
Only the consistently best-selling Millie the Model (which began in the forties and will become the last Timely-Atlas title to be cancelled in the seventies) and the western titles prevent a complete takeover.
Marvel Comics appears on the front covers for the first time beginning in May, using a small box in the upper left-hand corner of the cover and also featuring a small picture of the title characters. The box, incidentally, was designed by Steve Ditko.
The letters pages begin to appear in all the titles and also this year the first announcements for other titles also appear on the letters pages. This feature would later become a separate page entitled Bullpen Bulletins.
He Lives! He Walks! He Conquers!
Anthony Stark, and his alter ego Iron Man, make their debut in Tales of Suspense 039, created by Stan Lee, designed by Don Heck and scripted by Larry Lieber.
In his origin story, Stark builds the Iron Man armour when he is injured in Vietnam. The armour offers protection for his heart, endangered by shrapnel lodged near to it, and is also protection to allow him to escape his captors.
The first Iron Man suit was soon replaced by the first of many sleeker and gadget-laden suits.
Later in the year Iron Man would become one of the founders of the Avengers.
Spider-Man Swings into Action
Spider-Man was introduced in the last issue of Amazing Fantasy and in March he gets his own bi-monthly title. It wasn't long before it went to monthly.
The first issue adds J Jonah Jameson, publisher of the Daily Bugle, to the roster of characters, and as well as being a nemesis of Spider-Man the relationship is deepened by Peter Parker working at the Bugle.
Stan Lee saw the opportunity to try the 'Marvel Method' of characters with personality alongside all-action artwork on a new war title.
Fury and his Howling Commandos are based in England and the title is promoted on the cover as by 'the team that brings you the famous Fantastic Four'.
Although the stories are set in WWII Stan Lee would still find ways of including Fury and his team in the modern day and Fury would become the head of SHIELD later in the sixties.
In issue 013 of Fantastic Four, Lee and Kirby introduced us to the Watcher, later given a name - Uatu, who is a member of an immortal, and powerful, race of alien beings.
The Watcher has been a regular character in most of the major storylines over the years.
In the early years he also became a storyteller for some of the final short stories which would appear in the anthology titles.
Also Introduced in 1963
Other debuts in the first six months of 1963 -
The Impossible Man
The Red Ghost and his Super-Apes
The Mad Thinker and his Awesome Android

About the Complete Marvel Chronology
The Complete Marvel Chronology (CMC) is version 2.0 of the Marvel Chronology (MC).
The MC was created by cyager69 aka Chuck, who uploaded Marvel comics beginning with Fantastic Four 001 (Nov 61) through to the issues published in Jun 1997.
When Chuck was unable to continue the uploads I took over the MC and uploaded the remainder of the issues through to December 2008. Additional uploads added various titles not cover-dated with a specific month (the 'Decades' uploads) and seven Fill packs added new scans for issues missing when the original uploads were done for the 70's through to the 90's.
With none of Chuck's original uploads online, the decision was to either upload the original version of 1961-1996 or go with a brand new, full version incorporating the missing genres, such as romance, western and humour, and including the imprints which Chuck intended to upload following the completion of the MC.
The CMC will cover Marvel's entire seventy year history. At present I am uploading the years beginning with 1960 and these uploads will continue right through to December 1996. After that I have not finalised what will follow, but the likelihood will be that I go back to upload the 39-59 period, and then upload the 97-09 period again. When I do upload version 2.0 of 97-09 there will be many additions and many new scans.
News and Notes
Hello, everyone, the break is over and the CMC is ready to upload.
I will be uploading at least one year per week from the sixties onwards, and every four weeks or so I will upload a month from 2009.
The remainder of 1963 will be uploaded on Monday and the January 2009 titles will be uploaded Tuesday or Wednesday.
Then look for 1964 next weekend.
I have changed the format beginning with this upload so that more information can be provided about which issues are the same as the original uploads for the MC, and which ones are brand new or replacements.
I am also using the title and any volume number only as they appear on the indicia page.
This will make for some exceptions - Captain Marvel's first six issues later in the sixties give the title as 'Marvel's Spaceborn Super Hero! Captain Marvel' - I will use Captain Marvel for all issues.
Volume numbers are also a bit hit and miss. Marvel Tales, for example, is generally listed as volume 2 on most scans because there was a volume 1 in the fifties. But if Marvel say it is volume 1 that is what I will use too.
By dating all issues with the year and month of publication there should never be any doubt which issue it is.
Also, I will not be adding volume numbers to all the modern titles that do not use volume numbers. When the use of volume numbers ends, I will stop including them.
Enjoy the boks, and please seed for as long as you can.
Books used as research material in completing the CMC include -
Marvel Chronicle - Tom DeFalco
Marvel Vault - Roy Thomas and Pete Sanderson
Tales of the Implosion - Tom Lammers
Ultimate Marvel Age Reference 1961-1977 - Barry Pearl (not yet published)
Thanks to all the scanners, editors and uploaders who make the scans available.
Thanks for the support of all those who seed the CMC.
