Book of the Week - The Morville Hours

By Katherine Swift, abridged by Viv Beeby, read by Katherine Swift.

In the form of a medieval Book of Hours, Katherine Swift charts the formation of her Shropshire garden across the seasons. She likens it to finding one\'s place in the world and putting down roots.

The music is from the CD Officium, performed by Jan Garbarek and the Hilliard Ensemble.

Producer Elizabeth Allard.

From the Telegraph review of the book

In 1988, Katherine Swift took a 20-year lease on the Dower House at Morville, a National Trust property in Shropshire. She obtained permission from her landlords to create a new garden from a one-and-a-half-acre field to the north of the house. Where cows once grazed, a series of interrelated green spaces gradually emerged, tracing the story of gardening itself from the medieval hortus conclusus to the Victorian rose border.

Swift had previously worked as a rare-books librarian, and the garden could easily have become a rather academic horticultural exercise. The reason that it is not only instructive but also one of the finest gardens in the country is that it was created by someone who has a very good eye and who understands how things are connected with one another, working with nature rather than against it.

1/5 In the form of a medieval Book of Hours, her book charts the formation of her garden across the seasons. It is also a story of finding one\'s place in the world and putting down roots.

2/5 Katherine\'s progress is shaped by the wintry weather before the log fires of cold February nights give way to the emerging daffodils.

3/5 The scents of spring promise new beginnings in the garden and lead Katherine to reflect on the moment her parents first met.

4/5 Katherine and her garden suffer in the relentless and enervating heat of high summer.

5/5 Autumnal colours give way to the pleasures of winter. After tending her garden for 20 years, Katherine has put down her roots and come to terms with her past.
