Benjamin Zephaniah's radio play, first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2000, won the Commission for Racial Equality Race in the Media Radio Drama Award and has been adapted for the stage, first performed by Roundabout, Nottingham Playhouse's Theatre in Education Company, in September 2002. It portrays domestic violence as seen through the eyes of a boy who loves football and poetry.
Listen to Your Parents follows Mark, would be poet and Aston Villa footballer, through the week prior to his big chance - a try out at Villa Park! Mark’s lyrics paint vivid pictures and pose provocative questions: Why does Maria Shah taste of baked beans? Why do preachers shout when Jesus was so relaxed and chilled? What do you do when your dad hits your mum?...
