Torrent description

Afternoon Reading - Anger 19-05-2008 23-05-2008 BBC R4

From the Radio Times

\"Usually when people are sad, they don\'t do anything. They just cry over their condition. But when they get angry, they bring about a change,\" said Malcolm X in a speech from 1965. These five short readings have all been inspired by anger and were written by Oliver James, Andy McNab, Martina Cole, Charlie Falconer and Joanna Briscoe. Anger, it seems, can be creative, but it\'s also extremely personal. One man\'s amiable drive is another man\'s blood-boiling roadrage hell. And so it is that some of these readings are illuminating - like Andy McNab\'s experience of the violent ire of soldiers in active service compared to actors he\'s witnessed throwing an emotional, verbal tantrum- while other\'s come across plain smug. (\"YES, I MEAN YOU OLIVER JAMES!\" she typed in angry capitals.) The week closes with a story that brings tears to the eye - but they are of sorrow, not of rage.

1/5 Look Forward in Anger

Oliver James reads his overview describing and illuminating the nature of anger and looking at how and why we are perhaps angrier now than we have ever been.

2/5 Kinetic

Andy McNab reads his story of a personal journey from a turbulent childhood into the army and ultimately into battle, where geopolitical anger is reduced to man against man.

3/5 So Many Things

Martina Cole reveals how her anger at injustice, particularly the opprobrium heaped on single mothers, inspired her to take direct positive action.

Read by Elizabeth Carling.

4/5 Seeing Red

Former Lord Chief Justice Charlie Falconer reads his tale offering an insight into how anger impacts upon politics, how it can be effective and when it is disastrous.

5/5 Where?

Joanna Briscoe\'s moving tale focuses on the life of a terminally ill boy and the minutiae of personal, impotent anger.

Read by Robert Madge.
