Torrent description

Afternoon Play: Wordsmith 05-09-2008

Stephen Phelps creates a new detective and a new form of detection. Matthew Coleman, professor of English, has a sideline developing the art and science of linguistic forensics. When a cut-and-dried murder case is called into doubt, the language of interviews becomes primary evidence.

From The Radio Times

While forensic linguistics sounds like something nasty you might catch on public transport, it's actually one of the investigative techniques being pioneered to crack difficult crimes. In Stephen Phelps's play, professor of English Matthew Coleman is asked by old school friend DCI John Carsley to help solve a baffling teenage murder. "Occasionally you can find answers in what people say and how they say it," says Coleman before he does just that.

Who'd have thought that a Geordie word "hoy" meaning "throw" could have such bearing on a case? The always understated yet ever charismatic Mark Strong is the wordsmith of the title. Combine Strong's talents with writer Phelps's knowledge of the legal system (he's a former producer of BBC TV crime series Rough Justice) and you have a most enjoyable, realistic thriller.
