Surprisingly, the character in Finders Keepers is named Floyd Finders. In fact, the full title of the game is Finders Keepers: The Adventurers of Floyd Finders. And this one adventure that you'll be accompanying him on. Floyd has sailed the sea for years with his lovable cat Goldie and his lucky coin, which has kept him safe from harm for all this time. However, right when you're being introduced to the whole gang, the legendary Merboy leaps out of the water and grabs the coin with a "yoink" and disappears beneath the waves. That coin has been in Floyd's life for too for some punk sea creature to just steal it like that! You need to help him get it back!
The object of the game is fish treasures out of the sea (sometimes fish themselves) to make money. Now, the game doesn't actually explain how this will help Floyd get his lucky coin back, but in the long run, that didn't bother me one bit. I actually had more fun filling in the gaps myself. Is he hoping that he will find the coin among all the money he's making? Is he searching for Merboy and just needs money to eat during his search? I have no idea, but it didn't hurt the game at all.
What I Like About You
The first thing that I loved was the great art style and funny narrative. It's done in a very simple fashion; a lot of products try to pass off a confusing, convoluted plot as "rich storytelling," but that isn't the case here. The opening scene probably doesn't have more than ten sentences, but it works well and you'll be laughing your butt off.
The gameplay takes a little while to get good at - it's all based on timing - but it's never tedious and it never feels like a chore. You must shoot your trap down into the ocean and attempt to pull up valuable objects, whether they be gems, pearls, fish, etc. The trap automatically swings from side to side, simply click when you think something is lined up with it. The rope will shoot out and clamp onto whatever it hits. The bigger that something is, the longer it takes to reel in, so be sure it's something worthwhile that you're grabbing.
If you do happen to grab something that you don't want for whatever reason, you can throw a bomb at it and blow it up. Simply click on the bomb barrel (or hit up on the keyboard) to throw a bomb at the object and explode it into shards.
You can also move your boat side to side to get a better shot at certain things.
Each level will give you a certain monetary goal to reach. Of course, certain things are worth more than others. Big purple gems usually bring in a hefty sum, while small fish don't. Certain creatures, like squid, will swim in front of things and block them, but even grabbing them will bring in some money.
In between levels, you can purchase things at the shop which change different things about the game, such as making Floyd stronger or making his boat move faster.
A Fine Catch
Finders Keepers is a great game that boasts addictive gameplay and wonderful, engaging narrative. If you're looking for something new, you can't go wrong here.
