The James Dean Story is a documentary that was made in the 1950s. It's very dated and slow-paced by today's standards, of interest only to historian documentarians and james dean fanatics. The soundtrack, however, is a little more accesable. This album is full of bebop jazz, with impressive trumpet and piano work. The music sets a perfect tone for the type of music often associated with James Dean's era (the mid 1950s). Although Dean is often associated with youthful rebellion and rock and roll, he actually preferred classical music and jazz ( which were still the most popular types of music in America at the time of his death ). ~ J.

Amazon reviewer:
This album is something different than just another Chet Baker session from the fifties. I love Baker of course, and certainly I don't mean that a session from Chet is something not precious. But this album is more a collective effort from an extraordinary group of musicians than a Chet's date, this is what I mean. Sonically, it doesn't present the hallmark of Chet Baker's music (apart maybe "Let me be loved" that is sunged by Chet). It's pure west coast jazz of the highest caliber with all the precious things that it means for each of us. I mean that you have swingin' moments and more "abstract" or orchestrated moments but in any case the charts and the writings are always absolutly exceptional. Pure west coast delight all the way. It is not "only" a good blowing session, it's something more elaborated. Being a soundtrack for the documentary about the life of James Dean it follows a sort of concept and the music flows trying to tell the story of the different moments of the man's life. The list of musicians is absolutly stunning: Bud Shank, Chet Baker, Don Fagerquist, Charlie Mariano, Bill Holman, Richie Kamuca, Pepper Adams, Claude Williamson, Monte Budwig and so on, you have the picture. The arrangements are from two of the greatest arrangers of the era, Johnny Mandel and Bill Holman, infact the charts are incredible. The year is 1956. What are you waiting for? ~ Jazzcat "stef"
