Sibelius - Symphony No. 3 in C major, Op. 52 (1907) - Symphony No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 82 (1915-19) - March of the Finnish Jaeger Battalion - London Symphony / Helsinki Philharmonic / Robert Kajanus

The recording presented here of the Third Symphony conducted by Robert Kajanus (1856-1933) is really quite remarkable.

And, reading through the biography of Kajanus, we learn just how much he came from an era fundamentally different from our own (in which art and its pursuit was not primarily conceived, for example, as a means for achieving some kind of material success along with the advancement of the artist's "creative ego" - quite irrespective of the intrinsic value of the work produced). Already having achieved some success as a composer (he was 9 years older than Sibelius) - and recognizing the greatness of Sibelius - Kajanus eventually abandoned his own composing career to promote the work of his younger colleague (how many better-off, better-connected artists would do this today ...?)

Sibelius later wrote: "I owe Kajanus a debt of gratitude for what he did for me, not only in my youth, but also at a later period, when the really outstanding champions of my art were not too numerous."
