Motown Records est un label discographique crée à Détroit (Motor Town, d'où le nom du label) en 1959.
A cette époque, la ville de Détroit connaissait un fort essor économique lié à son industrie automobile, lui permettant, en tant que 5eme ville des Etats Unis, une activité culturelle assez importante.
Dès 1960, et durant une décénnie, le succès des artistes ayant signé chez Motown fut fulgurant.

DÉBUT DU DÉCLIN
En 1972, le label déménage de Détroit pour s'installer au soleil de Californie, à Los Angeles.
Dans ce déménagement, il y perdra certainement son âme...
A partir de cette date, au delà de la quantité produite, c'est surtout la qualité qui commence à faire défaut, les palmiers de Californie ne donnant plus à la musique la force originelle et le parfum de lutte que lui insufflait la ville industrielle du nord.

LA CHUTE
Dans les années 80, des artistes tels que Lionel Richie perpétuèrent les succès commerciaux de la Motown, mais plutôt avec de la soupe pop insipide, bien éloignée déja de musiques fortes et engagées comme la fameuse chanson "War" de Edwin Starr...
En 1988, le fondateur du label Berry Gordy vend Motown pour une petite fortune.
Dans les années 90, Motown vivote en produisant des groupes tels que Boyz II Men qui ne passeront certainement pas à la postérité comme leurs prédecesseurs Diana Ross ou Marvin Gaye.
Aujourd'hui le label éxiste toujours, et fait partie du groupe Universal, autant dire que globalement ce label a parcouru un long chemin en presque 50 ans d'éxistence.
