Description: Back in a time when comic book and sci-fi were young there was an author named Alex Ramond whom for his time revolutionized the way we looked at both mediums. A pulp comic book strip series called Flash Gordon which was contained a broad and bright fantasy world full of different world with features and customs. Starships, wild beasts, ray guns, hawk-men, swords, beautiful strong and slightly vulnerable women in alluring attire, you name it it was all there and no science included. This comic series created a universal effect which inspired numerous sci-fi sagas like Star Trek, Space 1999,and Star Wars. As well as cartoon shows like He-Man, Vishionaries, and Thundercats.
This film (may'be not successfully)capture the style and the feel of the original comic series perfectly well or at least came close. Like in the comic series the story starts out like this. Earth is being attacked by unknown alien forces whom are causing unnatural weather phenomena that is tearing the planet apart. A sports superstar Flash Gordon along with beautiful but slightly nerve racked travel agent Dale Ardon after an unnatural meteor shower hits their plane they are forced to crash land, which lands them into an truthful but slightly eccentric scientist Dr. Hans Zarcov. He forces them to travel on a home made rocket ship which takes them to another universe called Mongo. They go there to try to negotiate with evil ruler Ming the Merceless whom rules the system with an iron fist. He makes other planet fight each other or destroys them for fun. After being unreasonable and all three characters defiling him he then has them separated and imprisoned. It isn't until Ming's beautiful voluptuous and manipulative daughter Princess Aura frees Flash Gordon which is the start of Flash's journey to create a mighty army to save his true love Dale and free Mongo and Earth from Mings evil grip.
I know that this film in the 80s and probably throughout a matter of time has been constantly criticized over and over again for how bad it is because of it's numerous follies. But I watched it when I was about 9 and still watch it today and believe it or not there really aren't so much at all in fact they don't even exist. There are only two major problems with this film. For one thing the film doesn't feel long enough, this is a problem because were robbed of seeing more of the Mongo universe and the wonders it has to offer; like other major characters mainly the Lion Men whom were considered the best thing about the series. I can't help but feel this should have been made into a movie saga full of sequel instead of a single movie that way this loss could have been prevented. Another bad thing is Flash Gordon and Dale Ardon, both characters are terribly miscast and have little to do. Not just are they played woodenly by Sam Jones and Melody Anderson, but they don't physically look right (they kinda look like high school freshmen where maturity is needed), and seem to not take the leadership role which made them influence events and make a difference. Their instead reduced to mere foot solders where every else does the work for them. Probably Bruce Cambell and Debra Winger or at least some other good actors would have been a better choice for the role.
Well all that aside this film is good because it's a lot of fun due to the fact that it's style over toping substance. We see colorful backgrounds and enviorments the planets contain. Effects and star ships that are both cheesy but amazing to look at the same time because that is exactly what it looked like in the comic book (or close to it). But most of all colorful costumes and a fun kick ass soundtrack from Queen that will eat your eyes whole and make your ears ring, from all this you can easily get distracted and thats a good thing.
Also it's the minor characters that literally steal the show in fact their almost the main characters literally. They have been perfectly cast from Dr.Zarkov (Topol),Hawkman leader Vultan (Brian Blessed), Prince Barin (Timothy Dalton), Ming (Max Von Sydow), Klytus (Peter Wyngard), and Aura (Oraell Muti). They all seem to understand their roles and embrace them.
And who could forget some memorable moments like the Tree Beast test (sort of an alien form of Russan Rollete) which literally kept me on the edge of my seat. Or the siege against a star ship which was just blazing with action seeing hawk-men, lasers and explosions left and right.
Flash Gordon might not have really been the one to save the day. But it was the style and the audience/fans of the film/comic series and their love for it that were the really heroes in this story.
