In recent years, PARADISE LOST have lost (no pun intended) many fans for changing their style from that of epic Doom Metal to kind of a doomy Progressive Metal to the heavy use of electronics. The high point of their career is mostly considered "Draconian Times". With its mix of rough vocals and clean passages and combined with heavy guitars and atmospheric synths, who could deny this as being an awesome album? Well, certainly not I. But I think that fans have not really given the new stuff a chance. "One Second" is clearly an excellent album when taken for what it is. And subsequent releases have proven their worth, while maybe not matching the quality of "One Second".

So now, PARADISE LOST have returned in 2002 with "Symbol Of Life". Well, this album won't encourage nay-sayers to start digging the band again, as this seems to be more the style that they have explored in recent years. However, I do think that this is the best PARADISE LOST album since "One Second" or even "Draconian Times". With its blend of heavy guitars, industrial elements, and atmospheric keyboards, I see nothing wrong with this album. Nick Holmes is also experimenting with his voice even more. While he has used his clean voice exclusively in these past years, he now uses his clean voice coupled with some rougher singing as well as a growl or two. Not many, but they do exist.

I find that this album is catchier and much more satisfying than the last couple releases. It relies more on a rockin' industrial vibe. The melody is still there, though, and they work well together.
