The title of this beautiful late symphonic work is sometimes translated "An Imaginary Journey to the Faeroe Islands." It was written on commission for the visit of a delegation of representatives from the Faeroe Islands to Denmark in 1927.
Nielsen may have described it as "job-work," but it is in fact an imaginative and worthwhile piece. It falls into three sections. The first two are slowish, with the second a bit faster, while the finale section is an extroverted "Allegro molto." It seems to suggest a pleasure excursion to the Islands, culminating in a folk festival. One of the themes of the overture is a folk song from the Faeroes, "Easter Bells Chimed Softly."
