This recording is really great. Pinnock does a magnificent job interpreting each piece. It's one of those CDs that you really have to listen to a few times before you "get" it (at least it was for me), but once you do, you'll unlock so much beauty.....
Rameau's music is filled with emotion and rhythmic power. It also, sometimes, focuses more on harmony than melody, unlike all other baroque composers (It could possibly be considered Baroque music for lovers of Romantic music).
The harpsichord sound is one of the best I've ever heard. There's no clangy, shrill sound like on many other harpsichords.
(Pinnock plays on a double-manual harpsichord by Jean Goermans, Paris 1764, modified by Pascal Taskin in 1783-84)
Also, if you like very strict interpretation of the score, this one might not be for you. Pinnock takes some liberties with the ornamentation, adding some ornaments on notes that are marked unornamented and he changes a few notes, here and there, but it's done very tastefully. For me, it just adds to the beauty.
Pinnock is definitely my favorite Rameau (& other composers) player. Sound Quality is great, everything is great. Get this.
